How Low Level Laser Hair Therapy Works

Girl noticing thinning hairLow Level Laser Hair Therapy, or LLLT, has become an effective method of hair loss treatment over time. For those who challenge whether or not it works, there is one simple answer to the question: Yes, it does work and there is data dating all the way back to 1967 that says it does.

This data started being gathered when the lasers were being tested on mice. No, there were not exceptionally hairy mice in a laboratory. Instead, the scientists shaved the backs of the mice and administered the treatment. One group of mice received the laser treatments and the rest of them did not. Those treated with the laser grew their hair back much faster in the shaven area than the mice that were not treated with the laser.

Since then, numerous clinical studies have been performed on LLLT throughout the decades and it has been found that it works amazingly well, according to the clinical studies that have been approved by the FDA.

But how does Low Level Laser Therapy work?

This is a question that we field in our clinic from our new Bedford and Fall River clients. People looking for LLLT in New Bedford want to know how it works, but first it is important to understand it.

What is Low Level Laser Therapy?

The process was originally developed in Central Europe. It is a non-surgical treatment that uses infrared light therapy to stimulate hair growth. The light is applied to the scalp. Unlike other types of laser treatment in the medical community, this type of laser uses a “soft” or “cold” laser, which means there is no thermal component. This light is emitted at a specific wavelength that has an effect on the body when it is applied for a specific amount of time.

Because there is no thermal component, there is no pain. Patients should not have any type of discomfort. There is no UV radiation either. After treatment, patients are able to return to their regular activities.

When receiving treatment, it only takes an average of 30 minutes out of your day. You sit under a device that emits light. While receiving treatment, you can play games on your cell phone, read a book, or close your eyes and relax.

How LLLT works

How LLLT works is rather simple. The light energy is applied directly to the scalp. The type of energy that is emitted promotes cellular metabolism. Cellular metabolism has something to do with hair growth to begin with and what it does is increase blood circulation to the scalp. When blood circulation is increased, so is the oxygen supply to the hair follicles. This brings hairs from the resting phase to the growing phase.

The laser light is absorbed by the molecules in the target tissue. This increases the energy level of the molecules, so they respond by working off that excess energy. This results in changes and they may be physical or chemical and they have a biological effect on the target tissues and the tissues surrounding the target area.

But why doesn’t the sun do this?

Keep in mind that the laser light that is applied is not UV light. The sun contains UV rays. The light emitted from the laser device is much safer and non-thermal.

The result after treatment is healthier hair that is of a high quality. The volume of the hair is also increased because of the resting hairs that have been woken up. Many patients state that their hair is softer, fuller, and easier to manage.

Are You a Candidate?

Low Level Laser Hair Therapy is designed for individuals suffering from hair loss. This means that there are many candidates throughout New Bedford and Fall River who can benefit from LLLT.

If you are noticing the first signs of hair loss, you can benefit. It doesn’t matter if you are male or female or what color your hair is. You may also be someone who has had a surgical hair restoration procedure and you are looking to accelerate the process. LLLT can aid in the healing process after surgery and the growth of newly grafted hair can be accelerated.
